Promise or Pay is all about using small, personal promises to drive real, wide-scale social change.

It’s no secret that sticking to self-improvement commitments is difficult. In fact, while 45% of people make New Year’s resolutions, only 8% stick to them. It is no wonder that the self-help industry generated over $11 billion globally in 2013!

Research shows the chance of achieving a goal increases 33% if it is shared with others and by 72% if money is put on the line. Promise or Pay combines these two approaches by enabling you to make a public promise to do something, and if you fail to follow through, pay a nominated amount of money to a charity.

Promise or Pay ensures a win-win outcome is always achieved and you are left feeling good. Either you keep your promise thereby benefiting yourself, or you contribute towards solving a pressing social problem via your donation.

You can promise to do anything – give up smoking, reconnect with an old friend, save more money, or climb Mountain Everest! However we do ask that you keep your promises family-friendly (promises that contain defamatory, explicit, obscene, threatening, or offensive content will be removed).

Making a promise is easy.

  1. Log in using your social media account, make your promise and select a date when you will complete it by
  2. Select one of our fantastic partner charities and choose an amount to donate if you fall short
  3. Share your promise via your social networks to help keep you motivated
  4. Update your promise – ‘Kept’ or ‘Broke’ – via the Your Promises page

Don’t worry – your donation is only processed if you break your promise or if you fail to update your promise before your selected date. And rest assured, all donations are processed by Promise or Pay and passed on to the charity you are supporting.
